11 Tips to Build A Better e-Com Site

By Ashish Mohta

E commerceBuilding an E-commerce site is worth if you have taken care of lot of things in mind. Like customers, B2B and B2C relationships. Here are some tips from some experienced persons I talked, some news and some of my views.

  1. Choose the right domain name : Don’t give a Tech Site name like “jojo”. Keep a name which actually tells about your e-commerce business.
  2. Avoid too many Ads: Don’t make the visitors feel they accidentally landed elsewhere.
  3. Have Clear idea about 3p’s : Details about Price, Payment, and Prices must be very clear. You don’t want to get sued for not telling how much was it.
  4. Start Only when you are really ready: This I would say it goes for any site, could be blogs too. Before you launch something be ready. You don’t want to create a bad first impression.Have it planned, talk about it too people and collect ideas.Advertise.
  5. No Broken Links: Don’t have links on your site which doesn’t work or brings back to same page.Trust me people don’t have much time.If they find its not working, you are dead.
  6. Integrate Your Promotional Campaigns: Promote the site all around the world.Invest in good ad campaigns like Google. They might be costly but it can bring you customers.
  7. Include Variety of Transport mode: Being a b2b or b2c site, you should have different kind of ways people can get your product.Shipping, by air.Make it possible that it gets delivered to customers at door step.
  8. Make a secured website: If you dont have security people will loose money once while trading with you but you will loose customers forever and trust me bad words spread very fast.
  9. Try Multiple Languages: Give you site an internationalized look.Customers from any country should be able to read what you are selling. This will increase your global market.
  10. Optimize it for indexing: Get hold of webmasters who know about SEO concepts, so you site can get indexed on big search engines like Google and yahoo.
  11. Lastly , Remember the 10 second rule: I have seen websites and blogs which takes at least 2 minutes to load, do you have so much of time. What will happen is say if the user is searching for a product which is available in 2 more sites, which get listed on search engines. If you site is taking too much of time. They will click others and they open first YOU GET CLOSED!!!!

Number 11, the 30 second rule, I thought it was something like 5 seconds at the most. There’s no way I’d wait 30 seconds for a website to load!

    • Ashish Mohta, January 15, 2007:

@David: I agree with you.30 seconds would be too long. These days servers are faster and u just few some seconds.Thx for bringing that to notice.
