Amazing Striped Iceburgs or Photoshop ?

By Ashish Mohta

Icebergs in the Antarctic area sometimes have stripes, formed by layers of snow that react to different conditions. Blue stripes are often created when a crevice in the ice sheet fills up with melt water and freezes so quickly that no bubbles form.

When an iceberg falls into the sea, a layer of salty seawater can freeze to the underside. If this is rich in algae, it can form a green stripe. Brown, black and yellow lines are caused by sediment, picked up when the ice sheet grinds downhill towards the sea.

@alifan and Haris: Not sure but the last ice burg picture on the left has too much of blue which I have a big doubt on…Only an expert can tell

  • Ranbeer, May 12, 2008:

To me, it looks like a very creative work done, using some imaging tool, 1st, 3rd and 4th, give a reason to doubt, in the 1st and 3rd pic, if you try to analyse, only the iceberg is colored not the sea water (its in black n white kinda look), again mark the sea water color in 4th one, blue color in water is much much blue than it should actually look.

I just got through looking at your striped icebergs. Go to the Snopes website. When I have a question about something true or false, that is where I can check out the facts. The pictures of the striped icebergs are true. They even explain how the bergs are formed. On the Snopes website they have a link to an Austrailian photographer who has a great eye for photography and has take some beautiful shots.
