Intel thought if you cant go faster go broad and AMD said lets spread around.!! Got it!! NO? Few months back Intel released Quad Core Series beating AMD but there was rumors that AMD is coming with something big and different.Sure it is.

Overview:

Processors with time were getting faster but then there was a problem of being how fast.Due to high speed there was huge consumption of power hence it resulted in lower performance.Then Intel came with idea of and went broad i.e it integrated 4 processors so they can work together to reduce the load on single processor and low power consumption.You can read more on Intel series - Intel Quad Analysis Series.

However, AMD walked a different path.While Intel was busy in stuffing processors on one chip AMD came up with idea of adding more chips to their motherboard.So this way they can set up a new standard for socket specifications.

How does it look?

AMD SOCKETS

The extra socket which is in white lets you add specialized processors among other possibilities.SO what you do is you take a 4×4 board, add 2 Opteron dual cores along with java co-processor and say encryption/decryption chips or may be a GPU or Graphical Processing unit. Thus reducing the load on the processor and decreasing computation load on processor,

AMD calls this as “Torrens” and this kind of socket is called as innovation socket.

It seems like as the multicore processors and Fusion of AMD and others such idea keeps coming there is a need of standardization for this kind of architecture.According to pcquest body like “Multicoure association” and EMBC “Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium” had already started working towards it.
