We had talked a lot about why it is smart to buy Office 2010 before and now Microsoft has announced a beta release of the product which is availble for free download in English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, and German.

You can download a copy from here

However since this is a beta version it will expire in October 2010, exactly after a year. Also this version requires activation which you would be prompted for once you launch any of the component e.g. Word, Excel.

EFS redirects mail from POP3 to Local SMTP Server

EFS or Email Forwarding System is a free windows application which allows you to forward emails which you receive on your domain account to local SMTP server which is running to accept mail from your domain. This is pretty useful if you had set up an email where all mails are sent and dont want to use the boring Mail Software provided by the ISP.

Features :

Rules based forwarding based on subject, email address etc.
Allows you to schedule if you dont stay connected to internet all the time.
If you have Firewall configure EFS can work according to that.
You can control the SPAM by checking few things in header like no recipients found, to, cc etc. This is powerful feature and only advance users should configure it.

How to fix – Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window

Today morning when I tried launching Microsoft Office 2010, I was greeted by this message – Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. This was a bit of an issue as I am heavy user of Outlook for checking all my mails.

Looking around I found a solution which worked for me. Here I am listing few more in case my solution doesnt work for you.

Start->run..then type the following -> “Outlook.exe /resetnavpane” - Worked for me. Source
Try doing a system restore which in 90% cases solves the issue.
Try repairing Microsoft Office by running the original Setup files you must have.
Sometimes this happens because of the broken profile. So You can try to re-connect your outlook file by reading details here.
You can use the The Inbox Repair tool (Scanpst.exe) which is designed to help repair problems that are associated with personal folder (.pst) files. Read details here

So if you get the same problem try out the first and if it doesnt work then rest of them. However resting the navigation pane might mess with your favorite settings but thats not much of issue.

How to setup Windows XP mode in Windows 7

Since Windows Vista there is a compatibility mode enabled for every program which allows users to run programs like they are running in Windows XP machine. Same goes for Windows 7. It allows users to run programs which were running in Windows XP and Windows Vista under compatibility mode.

However some of the applications might just not work due to certain issues i.e. I would assume they use certain functions or API which are obsolete, this is common in commercial applications which are being used from a long time. If that is the case Windows 7 comes with support of Windows XP mode. Lets get to know how to set it up.

According to the Windows XP Mode support you need to have Virtualization Enabled ( HAV Detection Tool ) i.e. Needs AMD-V or Intel VT CPU feature
Download Windows XP mode for Windows 7
and Windows Virtual PC from here
Make sure you had selected the right Windows Version and language.

Once Installed all of them you will get Windows XP mode under Virtual PC Menu. Just invoke it to and follow simple instructions to start using it.

Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 Client was initially rolled out for Windows 7 and Server 2008 with lots of new feature but that was not available to users who used to connect from XP or Vista to any of the above OS. With the latest update in Google Docs it has become pretty easy for you to export all your Google documents into Microsoft office, Open Office or PDF format. All you need is to select all your folders and then click on more actions > Export. ( Make this an Word to PDF converter as Google Docs accept MS documents which can be now exported as PDF

I had about 81 personal docs (~13MB) and it only took about a minute to bundle the files up into a .zip file

And if you have huge number of files, just configure it to email you once the zip file is ready for download. Pretty Neat.

Many a times on writing on Windows 7 I had pointed you out towards menus like “Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools” which is good to understand but to find items in control panel is little bit tough even though you can make it easier using search everywhere.

Windows Access Panel is a freeware application which brings all those deep silted items on a simple dashboard.The only classification is advance and basic which is a good thing.

How to avoid adding duplicate contacts in Outlook

Microsoft Office Outlook comes with an inbuilt feature which helps you in finding if an email is already existing with any other contact when you add a new one. In order to enable this you need to check the label which says “Check for Duplicates when saving new contacts” which is available in Options > Contacts under Naming and Filing heading.

This way you not only keep your Contact Book much organized but also can easily detect duplicate contacts and keep an already existing updated.
