Since Windows Vista there is a compatibility mode enabled for every program which allows users to run programs like they are running in Windows XP machine. Same goes for Windows 7. It allows users to run programs which were running in Windows XP and Windows Vista under compatibility mode.

However some of the applications might just not work due to certain issues i.e. I would assume they use certain functions or API which are obsolete, this is common in commercial applications which are being used from a long time. If that is the case Windows 7 comes with support of Windows XP mode. Lets get to know how to set it up.

According to the Windows XP Mode support you need to have Virtualization Enabled ( HAV Detection Tool ) i.e. Needs AMD-V or Intel VT CPU feature

Download Windows XP mode for Windows 7

and Windows Virtual PC from here

Make sure you had selected the right Windows Version and language.

Once Installed all of them you will get Windows XP mode under Virtual PC Menu. Just invoke it to and follow simple instructions to start using it.

Here is the list of benefits you get :

One Click launch.

Access the USB devices you plug to Windows 7 in Windows XP.

Run Obsolete Business applications in Windows 7

Launch applications installed in Windows XP mode from Windows 7 PC.

Printer, Folders and Clipboard sharing between two.

Don’t miss out watching the videos and download support documents from Windows XP Mode support section which would tell you exactly how to configure every step both at home and in Corporate environment. If you are still on Microsoft Virtual PC 2007, here is a comparison chart on Why you should move to Windows Virtual PC.

Windows Access Panel is a freeware application which brings all those deep silted items on a simple dashboard. The only classification is advance and basic which is a good thing.

This is definitely useful for people who dont want to get into little complex control panel. You can read more about it @ The Windows Club and download from the same.

In Windows indexing files and folders result in huge index size because not only the file names get indexed but also the content inside it. This is useful when you are searching within document but it also slows down the search. Everything is small indexer application which limits itself by indexing only File names and folders resulting in faster search and faster indexing ( It took less than minute to index my 200Gb of data ).

Since many of us make search only to find file names or folder name this can opted on top of any indexing service. Apart from this Everything goes one step ahead and can help you find data on your network drive also if you keep one instance of this application to run as ETP / FTP / HTTP server

You will need to connect to that ETP /FTP / HTTP server and make searches pretty fast. This makes this application suitable for network environment where files are kept in a centralized environment i.e. Office or Collaboration.

Everything is high configurable which lets you :

Configure which drives needs to be indexed.

Exclude hidden files and folders.

Configure ETP / FTP / HTTP server to run on any port number you choose to.

HTTP / ETP / FTP server can be secured by using password.

Disable file download if required from HTTP / ETP or FTP server

You can configure it with your Firewall Host.

We would suggest you to Read more about it from the Official FAQ and Download it from here

Since Windows Vista Copy As path had been one of the most productive feature which allows you to copy the exact path of the file which you might need at many places such as when you want to upload a file. This lets you skip the annoying browse file option.

However many a times you would need more than just copying path. You might need just file name or parent folder name or may be even the UNC name and If you did share it you would also like to copy the network path. Copy Path (Via Freeware Genius ) is a small windows application which gets all you these options with just a simple right click and its free.

A small thing to notice in UNC or network path is that it displays could be in 2 formats. One in $ format i.e \\ARYAN\G$\MyOffice when you havent shared it and the other is normal format if you had shared it \\ARYAN\Users\Ashish\Desktop\ram.vbe . Also you can let the path names to displayed exactly or have good names by setting it in the options window.

Preview Change is a useful application which allows you to change file type association to either plan text ( opens with notepad, Media File ( opens with Windows Media Player or set it to none.

This is pretty much useful when it comes to preview of files using Windows Explorer or when you want to see thumbnails. Infact opening an INI file with notepad is better then anything else.

Apart from this you can also dee details of some file extension so you understand a bit of what you are changing. So dont just go and change PPt to open with notepad. Find more details and download from Win Help Online

This is another accidental discovery for me while I was trying to rename several images. When you try to rename by selecting all the files, windows will rename files by taking the first file you renamed and then add (X) to it where X will be a number. However this makes the renaming process more tedious.

Here is what you should do :

Select all the files you would like to rename.

Rename first file ( You will have to rename it again but lets start)

Lets say you give the name as “My Room”

Now just dont press enter instead press tab.

This will set your focus to another file and you can edit it right there.

However all the files will be renamed according to first file name but you can rename by pressing tab till you reach end of it.

Further renaming doesn’t change any other file name.

In case you want to go back to previous file just press Shift Tab and you will move back the order. This you can use to rename the first file again. This works in both Windows Vista and Windows Seven. I wasnt able to test it in Windows XP though but it might work.

In corporate or IT environment we regularly deal with shared path when it comes to transferring files or taking backups or sharing data between team and Most of my team members had hated on thing : Remembering the share path which takes lot of remembrance specially if your computers are have naming conventions like columns rows and grid.

The other option is to map them in My computer as network drive but then its like opens invitation to go and see to anybody who access my computer. So we manage in mails or notepad or even on scratch pad.

Syspad is small but pretty efficient solution if we face similar problems. Its lets you manage folders and files and even network path with a name which you can remember so instead of having \\xyzserver\\xyz123backuparea\u348976 you can just have xyzproject has tag name to remember.

Syspad comes along with a scratch pad which is like multiple notepads and folder pad which is the hero of this software. As soon as you launch the program, Syspad just sits on your notification area / system tray ( Its pretty silent, so just don’t wait for something happen), just look for this icon and make a right click:

This launches the folder icon where you get quick access to sections like my computer, my network , control panel etc and also you can browse and any number of folder path which is launched when you click on it.

That is, keep on adding any number of path and you will never forget. The only thing I would suggest is you make it run with Admin privilege to make sure it doesn’t get any problem in I/O operations. Download Syspad. And yes there is notepad like program which I am leaving on you to explore. You gonna love that too.!!
