Bionic Eye : Project in effort to make blind see

Boston Retinal Implant Project is putting an effort to bring Vision to the blind people using a electronic human compatible device which they call it as Bionic Eye. If this project succeeds, it will create big hopes for people who had lost their vision during an accident or due to some disease and even old people.

Bionic eye, called as Argus 2, works by using an array of electrodes which sits on the retina. The person can wear a pair of glasses ( mounted with camera and video processor )  sends signals received from outside world and focuses on the electrodes. Depending on the brightness and darkness combination the electrodes are lighted in similar way as normal eye works.

However the challenge still stays with the user to understand and interpret these images. It might take sometime but it shouldn’t be hard. It was tried on a 73 year old man Ron who lost his sight and with little practice can do some household works. You can watch what he says on the new eyes he has got.
