Create Site Specific Browsers with Bubbles

By Manav

The concept of Site Specific Browsers (SSB) seems to be catching-up. A site-specific browser (SSB) lets you convert a browser instance  to a specific web application. Once  this instance is integrated with the application, it will continue to stay on your system tray — just like Gtalk application or Yahoo messenger.

This enables you to readily access this on-line application in the same way in which you access a desktop application. An SSB integrates your favorite on-line application with the desktop and enables you to run it like a desktop application. Now the question is why we need SSB when we have several web-browsers.Here goes the answer to it.

SSBs have following advantages

  1. For applications like on-line word-processors, several browser features (like the navigation buttons, and the home button) are actually unnecessary and have only a nuisance value.
  2. If loaded with several web sites, a browser often fails
  3. Keeping some applications opened alongside sites on multiple tabs could pose some security threats like cross browser attacks and browser security issues.

Bubbles is a desktop application which can help you to create the SSBs for you. A small setup file is required for this which can be downloaded here. Install it and open the Bubbles interface.

Some ready-made bubbles, like for Gmail, Facebook, Flickr, Yahoomail etc. can be installed directly from this link which has those scripts. These Bubbles are quite interactive like the Bubble for Gmail here once installed and signed in, resides itself in the tray, sits silently till you don’t get a new mail in your Inbox, the moment a new mail hits your inbox, you get notified by the Bubble as shown below.

Apart from this you can create Bubbles for the sites you visit regularly, or the mail clients / social networking sites where you keep yourself logged in for the whole day. Just open the Bubble interface and type in the URL in given field, and hit the Create button. Once done with the creating part, shortcuts can also be created, for the particular Bubbles.

My Experience with Bubbles

  • Using the Bubbles is very easy.
  • Quite Light Weight
  • Once you minimize the Bubbles, they are minimized to Tray, this leads to a neat look on the screen.
  • As there are no buttons, no-toolbars, no address bar, the view of site you get via Bubbles is quite wide, which in itself is pleasing.

Hope you too like Bubbles as I did, have your say, and if you give it a try let us know your experience.
