Five Tips to Exploit Gmail for you
#1 The power of plus ( + )
Gmail has a hidden feature according to which while giving your email address to someone you can suffix ‘+groupname’ after your id, e.g. while giving it to some of your business relation you can give your email address as ‘yourid+business@gmail.com’ instead of ‘yourid@gmail.com’, or while giving it to a family member you can add ‘+family’ in it, this allows a quick access, its just like adding an extra tag for quick search.
#2 The Default @gmail
While sending an email to another Gmail user, you can simply send the mail to his id, i.e. you can skip ‘@gmail.com’ and still the mail gets delivered to the exact recipient.
#3 Keyboard Shortcuts
Ever felt like having Keyboard shortcuts for your email client, well for Gmail, check out this page, you can also bookmark it to stay updated.
#4 Dots in between your Gmail id
The dots in your Gmail address actually are meaningless, ‘yourname.lastname@gmail.com’ is same as ‘yournamelastname@gmail.com’, moreover the id part is not case sensitive, that means ‘YOurnaMELAstname@gmail.com’ is also the same for Gmail. Read Ashsih’s post on this.
#5 Some Search Tips -
- ‘after:year/month/date’ , ‘before:year/month/date’ can be used for finding the mails sent or received after or before the specified date.
- ‘OR‘ can be used as follows ‘from:A OR from:B’ where A and B are senders, can also be used as ‘to:A OR to:B’, this will display all the messages sent to A or B.
- ‘-‘ (Hyphen) Is used to make exclusions, like ‘Chocolate-Lollypops’ will display the mails which have word ‘Chocolates’ but not ‘Lollypops’.
- ‘filename:‘ type in filename:filename.doc will display the mails which have filename.doc as attachment in them.
