Gmail or Outlook [ Random Thoughts ]

By Ashish Mohta

Random DiceGmail and Outlook Express both had been the best tools for checking mails and each having its own set of features which them to be used depending on users choice and likeness and the complexity of usage. I had tried using Microsoft outlook express man a times but every time I tried harder It was one step moving back from using it. So what bothered me using Outlook Express and why I use Gmail instead.

  • Gmail is pretty simple to use. No complexity.
  • My approach is to use accounts separately instead of mixing all the emails at one place. Unless you have 100’s of accounts MS outlook is of no use to me.
  • Microsoft Outlook express is very powerful in terms of features its provides but then its yet one more heavy application I need to run on Windows which takes both memory and Space.
  • I don’t need to do any backup on Gmail. Its there and it will be always there. Outlook I need to archive and do this and do many other things. That ads one more step for me.
  • Many of the features which people look for like labels, filters and others are there on Gmail already. And soon we should get folder feature too.

I agree that its the user and the usage decides which fits for whom but when I see to myself , probably simplicity and light weight applications is what I prefer too. How about you ? What you intend to use ? Discuss with us in comment and suggest me something more.

I use Thunderbird for my web mail, and use Gmail from the browser itself.

Ashish, I’ve been reading this blog for quite sometime now and enjoyed just about all of the posts so far but I must say that this post of yours has really been disappointing!! Of all the 5 points you’ve written above, I can’t really get what are you trying to communicate! It would’ve been quite good had the post contained valid points for & against both Gmail & Outlook Express but its looks that this post has been posted out of a strong bias against Outlook Express & in favour of Gmail.

Sorry in being so straightforward about how I feel about this post but I think this is the lowest post that you’ve written which I’ve read!

      Hi Amit,

No issues and Thanks for your feedback.

Amit probably this is not the kind of post where I am trying to say which is good or bad from every body’s aspect. These posts are mixture of non traditional way of communicating which specifically is said to be verbal.

Imagine 2 people talking and one starts saying whats written above. It just starts a discussion which has to be continued by the other person which here is people like you and our readers.

I was expecting a comment like this and Thanks you said so I can express more on this. I can come out with more sophisticated kind of posts where I can add so many things and make it the perfect post but thats what I dont intend to.

If you would have read the introduction to the series, I said this series is gong to be a very non traditional way of writing. Something which is more verbal and what we say in regular.

And Guess I am seeing some success here. I am seeing more people commenting in this series than my regular post which gives me ideas.

To tell me your comments. I would like to go further into this discussion.

Ok, this a kind of dialogue that you are initiating here! I get it now, hehe! :) Ok cool, I think then this dialogue can be between blogs as well, so I’ll post my response on my blog then & ping it here! :)
