Have a camera or phone - become a journalist with YouWitness
By Ashish MohtaWith the advent of YouTube it became very easy for most of the people to showup anything they catch, onto a website. But now here is something new!.Yahoo and Reuters join to give “You Witness“.
Do you have a digital camera or a smart phone? If yes , you are the right person to snapshot something interesting at a viewable resolution for the two giants.
Participants will be allowed to post on a separate section of Yahoo’s news site and on Reuters.com.It could be anything like photos you have taken in your area, or even short movies about thinsg which you find interesting. Yahoo News is the most popular news Web site in the US, according to comScore MediaMetrix.
How does it work ?
Th submitted pics or videos will be reviewed by editors at both Reuters and Yahoo and will select some to place on pages with relevant news articles, just as professional photographs and video clips are woven into their news sites today.Basically they will try to vet them to weed out fraudulent or retouched images.
Why it needs to validate ?
This is a perfect process. According to one of the news source “Last summer, a blogger discovered that photos of the conflict in Lebanon by a freelance photographer working for Reuters had been digitally altered. Reuters stopped using the photographer and withdrew his work from its archive.” The company is now trying to develop software that will help detect altered photographs.
How the publishers will be paid ?
Will all of them will be paid No!.Every User will not be paid for images displayed on the Yahoo and Reuters sites. But people whose photos or videos are selected for distribution to Reuters clients will receive a payment.
The company has not yet finalized the structure of payments but the basic payment may be relatively small, but he said Reuters was likely to pay more to people offering exclusive rights to images of major events. For now, no money is changing hands between Yahoo and Reuters, but if Reuters is able to create a separate news service with the user-created material, it will split the revenue with Yahoo.
What will happen to Professional Photographers?
Thats one of the major concern growing now.As yahoo is planning to make a common person to a journalist and pay them on the top what will happen to already existing ones.
Rob Hyndman explains in his article “What will Happen to Proffessional Photographers” .
The Game is on between well established YouTube and YouWitness, its going to be sit and watch game right now but for sure yahoo will attract some people on to them.
