How to generate thumbnail of any web site or page dynamically [ Graphics ]

By Manav

In case you want to show thumbnail of any wbsite on your application which has access to Internet or may be create a thumbnail for your blog for a purpose you don’t need to use any tool to take snapshot and then resize to generate a snapshot. Just use Picoshot and get a thumbnail dynamically generated on your web site. Something like you see here.

How to use it ?

Its simple, Just use the syntax like

<img src=”http://image.picoshot.com/thumbnail.php?url=http://www.sitename.com”> and it will generate for you . If you dont get itin the first show try refreshing it you sure will get it.

What’s the benefit ?

  • It can be used any where you need to generate thumbnail
  • This way the image generated is always fresh. Even if the site changes the design .

So what is your opinion about it ? Would you like to use it in your application or web site ? Please share with us in comments.

I tried the following code on the address bar, it didn’t work.
    http://image.picoshot.com/thumbnail.php?url=http://www.rakshitk.com/blog

May be it only works with img tag.

  • Ashish Mohta, March 13, 2008:

@Rakshit: It works. You might not get the result on the first hit. The reason might be it generates and stores but is slow somewhere. ALl you can say it just takes time. Try it now

Good tool, but I wonder how they can sustain it - think of the server power required if just one thumbnail has to be created like this, and is served during a massive digg (50k+ pageviews in a day).

Yea, right. I got it now.
    Sorry for loosing patience, Ashish.
