Nokias new wireless technology – Wibree
Nokia has developed a new wireless technology that is 10 times efficient that Blue-tooth. Nokia calls it Wibree. Its supposed to be introduced in 2007.Do we need another short range wireless specification, Apparently yes!
What is Wibree?
Wibree is the first open technology offering connectivity between mobile devices or Personal Computers, and small, button cell battery power devices such as watches, wireless keyboards, toys and sports sensors .
What is it in terms of technology ?
Wibree technology complements close range communication with Bluetooth like performance within 0-10 m range and data rate of 1 Mbps. Wibree is optimized for applications requiring extremely low power consumption, small size and low cost. Wibree is implemented either as stand-alone chip or as Bluetooth-Wibree dual-mode chip. The small devices like watches and sports sensors will be based on stand-alone chip whereas Bluetooth devices will take benefit of the dual-mode solution, extending Bluetooth device connectivity to new range of smallest devices.
In Simple Language
The trick is not to have the radio on for long periods; low power can be achieved by using the radio in very short bursts. Minimizing the battery power required by medical devices is also desirable,Bluetooth hopping does consume some power, so Wibree won’t use it, but will instead do something very clever indeed; the details of which are not yet available.
Who’s Inside it ?
CSR, Broadcom, Epson, Nokia, and Nordic Semiconductor jointly announced the specification on Tuesday, which could be finalized as early as the second quarter of 2007. A few important details have been nailed down; proponents say it will be used to transmit data at 1-megabit rates across short distances of up to 10 meters, and that it will use about a tenth the power of Bluetooth.
