PayPal allows to transfer money to your debit card account

By Ashish Mohta

Getting a check from PayPal is one of the ways non-us citizens had been using to get money, A good sign now PayPal allows you to withdraw money into your debit card account directly at a minimal charge of 5$ within 5-7 business days..The Debit Cards (also called check cards, ATM cards, or banking cards) are accepted if they have a Visa or MasterCard logo. I discovered this today when I was thinking to get a Check. This is a big news and now it will be easy to get money. I hope Google Adsense also allows this.

Update: Paypal Now Allows to transfer money to Indian Bank accounts ( click to read)

I am not sure which counties have been covered in this but one of help line says

“Members in Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Cyprus, Estonia, Gibraltar, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Philippines, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Uruguay, can withdraw funds to credit cards that are withdraw eligible. You should allow 5-7 business days for your funds to post to your card, but may take more time, depending on your bank’s policies”

Here are the snapshots. I am waiting for my debit card which should be coming soon and then I will add it and get my money :D

I just checked in my paypal account, this feature is available. This is definately a good feature and I think most people will prefer this over cheque.

  • Nuts & Milk, October 3, 2007:

I don’t think Indian Debit Cards work with Paypal, I’ve being trying this since last year. You cannot add ANY Indian debit card to their system. Check it out yourself. Correct me if i am wrong!

  • Ashish Mohta, October 3, 2007:

@Nuts & Milk: I dont think this link was there before. One thing I am sure of is you cant add any debit card while verifying your paypal account. But I will try to addd one soon and let you know.

@Ashok: Did you try adding any debit card?

  • Nuts & Milk, October 3, 2007:

Yeah! Sorry but i forgot to mention exactly what you said - Indian debit cards cannot be used ‘to verify your account’. I should have put it in a different way :) In either case, Indian debit cards won’t work, thats wht i think!

  • Ashish Mohta, October 3, 2007:

@Nuts & Milk: Lets see If they work for this link. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for telling us. I will let you know what goes along with me

  • Anand, October 3, 2007:

Wow..that is absolutely awesome..It’s now so easy to transfer money to my debit card…

  • William, October 4, 2007:

    What with other countries?

  • Sameer, October 4, 2007:

Nopes, it doesn’t work with indian debit cards, do let me know if any of you have success with a debit card. I just tried withdrawing to a credit card, let’s see how long it takes and how it goes…

  • Ashish Mohta, October 4, 2007:

@Sameer: Is your credit card stand alone or you got it under a account?

I am also realizing debit card might not be expected as they don’t have verification number behind it.

  • Sameer, October 4, 2007:

well i’ve got an hdfc debit card which has a CVV number behind it but it still doesn’t accept it. Just doesn’t seem to work with indian debit cards. It’ll work with any credit card, I’ve got a credit card under my citibank account but it will work with all credit cards.

  • Ashish Mohta, October 4, 2007:

@Sameer: Thanks for the confirmation. Then We need to use the credit card now. One more thing I would like to know. I have a credit card but its not under any account. Can i still transfer money and withdraw it?

  • Nuts & Milk, October 4, 2007:

    @ashish
i told u that before :) No indian debit cards work!

  • Ashish Mohta, October 4, 2007:

@Nuts & Milk: haha I accept that i was wrong. :D This is becoming a good discussion now

  • Sameer, October 4, 2007:

I’m not sure if it’s possible to transfer money from a credit card to your bank account even if it’s linked. I used my citibank credit card for withdrawal but I’m quite sure I cant transfer the funds to my bank account - couldn’t find any option to do so even with the accounts being linked.

What I could do is: 1) I could either use the card at the atm to withdraw the money received but I would have to bear quite a huge charge on the withdrawal [I think] OR 2) use the money received to pay for the credit card bills, I’m assuming it will automatically adjust against my outstanding amount [this is the option I’m using].

I think withdrawing to a credit card doesn’t serve much purpose unless you want to use it to pay your credit card bills. It’s just best to withdraw by cheque and wait till the debit cards start being accepted, that’s when we can use the money without prohibitve costs.

Do correct me if I’m wrong about being unable to transfer money from credit card to bank account.

  • Ren, October 5, 2007:

Hey I used my credit cards both ICICI and CITI its not working, should try some other card now may some debit card. I think its a very good option to withdraw money and we can aviod xoom and other guys who loot us with their charge, but we should be able to add our cards in the first place.

P.s For my friend ICICI credit card worked.

  • Ashish Mohta, October 5, 2007:

@Sameer: Thats a pretty neat Explanation. I dont think you are wrong but I will call my credit card people and ask them about it in more details following your guidelines.

@Ren: Either you can call ICICI bank ask or try another one. Moreover Find out if there is any difference in type of account in between you and your freind’s ICICI account

  • vibhash, October 5, 2007:

    Hi Ashish,

After a long time I came to your blog…awesome theme :)
And ofcourse awesome news…i stopped doin some freelancing coz i wasn’t able to withdraw money frm paypal…

Btw if anyone has a HDFC bank visa debit card then you can use it Virtual Credit Card facility to create a new virtual card of say $2-3 to varify paypal…and believe me it works pretty fast…i varified my paypal long back using this vcc…

if anyone need any help just shoot me a mail :)

    -Vibhash.

  • Ashish Mohta, October 5, 2007:

@Vibash: Welcome back. and Thanks. Can you send us some detail on mail. I will update the post with it. If you have some images will be great!!

  • Nuts & Milk, October 5, 2007:

What vibhash is talking about is another thing. Visa debit cards CAN be used to create virtual credit cards numbers. This facility is no provided by cards that have MasterCard logo on them.

What the main discussion is that Paypal won’t allow you to withdraw money with Indian debit card - whethr its VISA or MasterCard!

  • Nuts & Milk, October 5, 2007:

Typing error - please read it as - “This facility is *NOT* provided…”

  • Ashish Mohta, October 5, 2007:

@Nuts & Milk: We agreed to your point. Now if vibash can show us a way we will be able to get a way to get our money through paypla. Just curious - how u get your money ?

  • Nuts & Milk, October 5, 2007:

Its easy - request a cheque. Or use xoom, I’ve tried both! I’ve even tried transferring 1000$ at once by Xoom. The money got deposited to my HDFC account within 48 hours. The checks took 15 days to arrive plus 7 days for clearance.

  • Ashish Mohta, October 5, 2007:

Nuts & Milk said request a cheque. Or use xoom and Xoom got 1000$ in 48hrs in HDFC account.

Thats great. I was doubting xoom but since you have tried I would really like to try it out now.

  • Nuts & Milk, October 5, 2007:

I used xoom 4 times last month. The first one was an experiment with just 50$. when it was done, i made 3 more transfers worth 500,500 & 1000$ to my hdfc account. The money was deposited without failure. At the same time i requested 2 checks from Paypal worth 500$ each. Paypal takes too many days. but one negative thing with xoom is that it offers low exchange rates compared to paypal. This rate can go up to as high as one rupee per dollar. This matters when you withdraw a huge amount like 3000$, like i did :)

  • Ken Xu, October 6, 2007:

This is really interesting. I’m having a problem with paypal until today. So, it’s kind of live-saver feature for us in Indonesia. :D
Now, I can promote affiliate programs that use Paypal payment with no headache anymore. THanks for the information.

  • Shivaranjan, October 6, 2007:

    Ashish-
Indian Debit cards face this problem because of RBI policies. I read this about in Nirmal’s blog.
    http://www.nirmaltv.com/2007/10/06/now-get-your-paypal-funds-directly-in-your-bank-indian-perspective/

  • Ashish Mohta, October 6, 2007:

    Thanks Shiva

    Here is the answer

Now you might be thinking why it is not available for Indian Visa debit card holders this is because RBI old school policies which don’t allows the Indian bank to get the money from Internet based services directly so debit card holders won’t be benefitting from this service until RBI changes its policies which are a bit old now and RBI really need to change its policies.

  • Nuts & Milk, October 6, 2007:

    Why fuss? Use xoom :)

  • ritesh, October 8, 2007:

can any one tell me i have a buisness account to withdraw funds to my credit card do i need to have credit card under my buisness name?
or my name will also work!

let me know if someone tried that..
    thank’s in advance.

  • SHAN, October 9, 2007:

Im also facing the same problem………………………………………….please help me

  • Bhaskar, October 11, 2007:

Guys your discussions above were really of great knowledge. Thanks for those

Well I did like to know if the new feature of witdrawing funds in HDFC Bank visa credit card has been successful as i have tried as sample with 100 usd wonder it will be credited to my credit card. what if not will those funds be back in my account? have you any guys withdrawn to hdfc credit card?

  • shan, October 12, 2007:

how u withdraw amount credited to credit card?

  • Ashish Mohta, October 12, 2007:

@Bhaskar: It should work but in case it does not, the money will be back to your account. Wait for few days.

@Shan: Its not possible to withdraw like that. If you do they will be charging you intrest. I had a talk with ICICI people and they said you can at the best use it as liquid money.

  • Daniel, October 15, 2007:

Hi there, first off great info. I found you over google, but Im losing my hair here trying to figure out why that option doesn’t appear in my paypal withdraw screen. All I have is the regular oldies:
-Transfer funds to your bank account
    -Request a check from PayPal
-Shop with a PayPal debit card
-Get cash out of an ATM
-Buy from over 42,000 PayPal Shops

I dunno what to do really. My credit card has already been verified and so as a US bank account I have there as well. I currenly live in Brazil and my credit card is from here. Im currently using people that i trust back in US to transfer my gains to my account here, but it consumes a very high amount of resorces :(

  • Ashish Mohta, October 15, 2007:

@Daniel: Hi, Thanks for sharing it. Brazil is listed though. It would be best if you mail paypal and ask them to tell the reason why is the feature not coming in your account. Thats the best we can do.

  • Daniel, October 16, 2007:

Hey again tnx for the fast response :D
Well I actually called paypal and they didn’t help me at all hehe. They said that option is not available yet, but I can see in your screen capture it is, and that just drives me nuts lol. Ok so apparently I’ll just have to deal with the fact that I cant just have a simple withdraw hehe.

Tnks a bunch anyways I appreciate it :D

  • Sameer, October 16, 2007:

An update for everybody, finally got the money withdrawn from paypal to my citibank credit card - it took around 10 days but it came and yes it was automatically applied against my outstanding balance. So guessing that’s the best way to use this method - use it to pay for any outstanding balances you have on your card, other than that no other way to transfer it to a savings account.

  • Ashish Mohta, October 16, 2007:

@Sameer: Thanks a lot for the info !!!. I tried with HDFC debit card also but did not work. I dont want to transfer it into credit card though. I want the cash to be trasnfered to my bank account so I can invest it somwere else

  • Mangobyte, October 28, 2007:

This option of Paypal withdrawal to CC is found successful and fully working. :)

For more details just visit this page

But there is still issues like can such external amount on CC be VMT (VISA Money Transferred) to any VISA Debit card or not..

  • Ashish Mohta, October 28, 2007:

@Mangobyte: Thanks but this works for credit card. Here we are looking for a debit card which can be approved. putting into credit card You cant withdraw.

  • Rick, November 19, 2007:

Greetings. Receive money in debit card account!?

But, do I need to link PayPal to bank account? Because I don’t want to…

  • Ashish Mohta, November 19, 2007:

    @Rick: Thanks for the comments.

Dont worry about linking, Paypal is safe enough. It will just transfer money and will not charge from your account anything.

  • sandeep, March 16, 2008:

I have a HDFC account with a debit card.
I must get my PayPal account verified. But with this debit card it does not work!
