Understanding OpenID

Every person in this world is unique and so is every website. This forms the basic concept of Open ID. Open Id is a open source, free framework for creating unique digital identity, in short like we have email id, yahoo login name and others which are not duplicated same is with open ID. However there is a unique feature about it. This applies globally. With the advent of increase in number of computer users the need of one id is much required feature. Its not going to be far when we will be know by a digital identity instead of a name.

How OpenId works ?

open id

open id

The basic concept of OpenID that anyone can identify themselves on the Internet the same way websites do-with a URI or also called as . Since URIs are unique in nature it serves the purpose of global uniqueness to identify any person

  • The common method of identification used now is validate the user by his username and password. OpenID works on a different concept. With OpenID Authentication your user name is your URI, and your password is safely stored on your OpenID Provider (which you can run yourself by using its api or use a third-party identity provider).
  • So when you login to a website which accepts OpenID, just type your OpenID URI. The website then redirects you to your OpenID Provider to authenticate you using whatever credentials it requires.
  • Once authenticated, the provider will redirect you back to the website as a logged in user.

This is similar or Microsoft Passport authentication service which is used my many companies to validate a user.

How to create OpenID ?

Just go to GetOpenID and follow the steps. All it requires is your email id. After that you can use it on any website which is supporting this feature.

My Views on OpenID

OpenID is no doubt an excellent service which might take a massive shape in future. Moreover being an open source it will get a huge support from the community also. But right now the implementation is still not complete and by the time it finishes there could be more services that might give the same facility. It will also take time for the users to move to open id. Its a long process and I don’t think people are ready for it. What do you think ? Share your views in the comments.
