Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive to deal with toxic computer waste

By Ashish Mohta

The image on the left shows what happens to the computers after they are discarded.Alarming!! isn’t it.

According to an estimation done, by 2010 there will be around 100m phones and 300m computers ready to be discarded. And where are they going ? As they are not being used due to advanced peripheral being adopted in developed countries, they are sent to third world or the developing countries like India.

Computer WasteThe European Union are taking initiative to to make new laws for regulating e-waste . According to the news

It is drafting a Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive that will ensure that more of the responsibility for dealing with old computers and mobiles will be placed on their manufacturers.

What is the effect of E-Waste?

Generally all computer items are made of chemical materials like arsenic, mercury , lead etc which are not only lethal to human body but can cause disease like cancer and breathing problems.Look at the image below and you will have clear idea of what i am trying to

hazards from a waste computer

So what is the initiative taken by vendors till now ?

Companies like Dell are in mode to provide compute up gradation in such a manner that people have to just change the part of upgradation.Sounds interesting but Difficult. They will have to watch the compatibility of each hardware with another. And people going for a new computer wont like to have just simple change in inside , they go for looks too.

One more option that can be looked for is “recycle”.It makes the system re-available to developing countries at cheaper rate but what after that ? One way or the other they will be disposed. So isn’t there any better rule so they have to disposed in certain manner. This will not only reduce dumps but a better way to fight with the problem. There should be rules for the vendors so they also participate in controlling the ewaste.

    • John Wesley, January 2, 2007:

I actually saw something on Tv about old computers being mined for gold and other elements. Evidently an old computer has more gold in it than the richest ore on earth.

@John: Its true , Even i have seen that.If they can go for that , it can be another solution for getting something out of these dumps.May be a company can start earning from these golds.Who knows

      Thx for coming back
