Which Anti Virus Passed the Test [ Follow up Post ]

Few days back we made a post on How to check if your anti virus is working in which a virus activity was simulated with a string which does the same. We got a huge response from lot of people and they gave us a feedback if their anti virus worked out or not. Here is a follow up.

Antivirus test String

Antivirus test String

Anti Virus which caught this when saved as TXT File ( Real Time ):

  • Norton
  • ESET NOD32
  • Kaspersky
  • McAfee Enterprise 8
  • Avanquest system
  • PC-Cillin
  • CA Antivirus (ca.com)
  • AVG 7.5 with firewall and AVG Professional 7.5
  • SystemSuite8
  • Zone Alarm

Anti Virus which detected it when saved as EXE or COM File

  • Avast
  • AVG Anti-Malware

Antivirus which detected it when scanned

  • Avira Antivir
  • Trend Micro 2008

Antivirus which never detected:

  • AVG
  • Avast Free Edition
  • Windows LiveOne Care

Why some of the anti viruses did not detected it possibly as its a test file. However I am not sure if its a good idea to drop test file by anti virus makes. If old virus test is removed there is always a chance of them coming back.

Another reason why it happened was  because text files don’t execute so its high possibility that some anti virus might skip. However you can set in the options that they should scan txt file or not.

Thanks for the awesome response and we not only came to know about which anti virus was doing what but also about so many different anti virus which we never heard of. Here is a follow up of this post where we had sorted out according to users response which antivirus worked and how.
