Many Windows users have upgraded to Windows 10 must have noticed that there is a WINDOWS.OLD folder on their drive. It is in the same drive where Windows installation took place. For those who are not aware, this folder is backup of your personal files if you choose it as an option before the upgrade. If you or Windows want to rollback, then it comes in handy. That said, if for some reason you are not able to find your personal files after an upgrade, here is how to auto retrieve personal files from Windows.old Folder.

How to auto retrieve personal files from Windows.old Folder

Windows Upgrade process takes a backup of all your personal files and keeps in this folder. Thankfully they are not encrypted, and you can easily access them. There are two ways of doing it:

  • Manually using File Explorer.
  • Using the Microsft Official program,

Make sure to copy them to a separate drive. Do not move in case you need a backup.

Manually: Explore the files using the File Explorer

  • Open Windows.OLD Folder and navigate to Users > Your User Name
  • It will list down all the folders like Download, Documents, etc. where your personal files are available.

Automated: Use the Microsoft official program to do it.

Remember using this is not compulsory if you see all your documents available at locations you expected. This program troubleshoots the issue and then automatically retrieve your personal files from the Windows.Old folder and copy them back to their original location.

Recover Personal Files after Upgrade in Windows 8

  • Download it from here.
  • Launch the program, and it will start troubleshooting.
  • If it finds a problem, it will start moving your documents to your current folder.
  • In case, it does not find issues, or you already have the documents, it will just quit.

How to auto retrieve personal files from Windows.old Folder

The best option is to first manually check, and see if all your documents are in place. If the automatic process works fine, your job is complete. But if it fails, you will have to copy them manually.  Once you are pretty satisfied with the migration, I will suggest you delete these files securely to retrieve some space.

If you thought that I was bit crazy when looking at the title post, I would not hold you wrong, after all, who wants to add programs to Windows Startup and make it even slower. All we do is keep removing programs or at least delay it. So, what’s the real idea of this topic? Its about to let you know about a change in Windows 10 and Windows 7 and a ubiquitous question asked: “Where is the startup folder in Windows 10/8”. In this post, we will learn how to How to disable and add Startup programs in Windows 10

Where is the Startup Folder?

That’s an excellent question, and sadly for freshly installed Windows 8 Users, this option is missing, but for Windows 7 users who upgraded to Windows 8 or Windows 10, this folder is still in place. I was pretty sure of that because I can even see some of my old programs yet getting launched after the upgrade.

Important: Also to let you know that you can no longer manage Windows 8 Startup programs from MSCONFIG. Instead, its now managed from Task Manager. Launch the Task Manager and switch to the Startup Tab.

If the StartUp folder is missing :

If you had used Windows 7, it was always there in Programs Menu and at two places. One was common to all users while other is user specific. Create a folder named Startup

  • User Specific: C:\Users\XXX\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
  • All Users : C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp

If its already there :

Type following in the Run Prompt (Win+R) for quick access.

  • shell:startup (User Specific)
  • shell:common startup (All Users)

How to disable and add Startup programs in Windows 10

Now we will learn how to add a program to Windows 10 Startup manually, and also learn to disable startup programs in Windows 10.

  • Add Programs to Startup in Windows 10
  • Disable Startup programs in Windows 10

Do note that the programs, which are manually included, do not have any impact rating. I guess that Windows does rank it over time, but for the program above, which had been there since the upgrade, there had been no ranking till now.

1] Add Programs to Startup in Windows 10

Add Shortcut to Startup Folder

Windows launch any executable program which is available in Windows 10 Startup Folder. So all you need is a shortcut in that folder of the program you would like to add. You may find it odd, but if you right click on the startup folder and look for New Shortcut action, its missing. You are only allowed to create folders. So this is what you need to do

  • Right Click on the Desktop > New Shortcut > Browser for Program > Done.
  • Now drag and drop this shortcut on your Desktop to the Start-up folder.

2] Disable Startup programs in Windows 10

disable and add Startup programs

In case you want to remove anything from the startup folder, I will suggest you disable it instead using the Task Manager. That way, you have an option to re-enable it whenever you want, and you will never have to remember what was the program name.

Let us know if these tips helped you to speed up your computer boot time, or add programs which you always wanted to boot with Windows 10.

Wordpad and Notepad are two windows editor which comes without any spell checker. Till now there had been no application ever attempted to add one to them. These two editors might not be very popular but comes very hand when you need to do a quick copy paste without opening any other heavy application. So the point is, How do I add a spell checker. No magic but a small but handy software called as Tiny Spell which integrates spell checking to virtually any word processor. It also works in Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. Let’s figure out how to add free Spell checker to Wordpad Notepad

free Spell checker to Wordpad Notepad

Add free Spell checker to Wordpad Notepad or anything you can type on

Virtually It does a spell check anywhere you can type on your computer.

  • Wordpad and Notepad
  • Pain or Photoshop Application
  • When you save a file with a new name
  • Check spell when you chat
  • Even when I am typing here.

Once you install it, it will sit in the system tray and monitor. There are two ways it can check spelling mistake for you.

1] Notification in the system tray

While you are typing, tinySpell watches the text you enter and whenever it detects a misspelled word it beeps and shows a spelling tip, and the tinySpell taskbar icon turns from white to yellow.

2] Clipboard Monitoring

When you copy text to the clipboard tinySpell checks its spelling immediately. If it finds at least one misspelled word in the text, it beeps and turns its icon to yellow.

How it corrects spelling

When a misspelled word is detected, click the tinySpell taskbar icon or press the hot-key to pop up a list of suggested replacement words. If the misspelled word is detected during on-the-fly checking or after a word is copied to the clipboard, you can select a correction from the list. The selected word is inserted into your document or is copied to the clipboard (so you can paste it in your document), or both (depending on your settings).

Features of TinySpell

  • Checks spelling in any Windows application, on-the-fly, or ext that is copied to the clipboard
  • Specify applications for which tinySpell is disabled or enabled
  • Add words to the dictionary
  • Beeps on error
  • Displays a spelling tip
  • It Opens replacements list with a simple mouse click or a hot-key
  • Can copy the selected replacement word to the clipboard
  • Optionally inserts the selected replacement word into the document

Here are a few examples of how this spell checker works on different applications:

UAC is an annoying prompt whenever you launch a program which needs admin privileges. Even though Windows 10  handles it pretty nicely but if you have some programs or executable which always need Administrator Privilege prompt screen, then here is a way to suppress them all the time. You can choose to launch Programs as Administrator in Windows 10. Use it with your favorite programs which you trust.

How to launch Programs as Administrator in Windows 10

  • Run program with Task Scheduler
  • Create shortcuts with ElevatedShortcut

1] Run a program with Task Scheduler

How to launch Programs as Administrator in Windows 10

Windows 10 offers Task Scheduler, which you can use to create automated and manual tasks. Since you will launch the program when you need, create tasks which you can manually run.

  • Type WIN + Q, and then type Task Scheduler
  • When the task scheduler appears, click to launch it.
  • On the right panel, click to create a task
  • Add Name, and then select the checkbox which says, “Run with highest privileges.”
  • Under actions, add the program you want to run with admin privileges.

Next, create a shortcut of Task Scheduler on desktop or Taskbar, and run all your programs from there.

2] Create shortcuts with ElevatedShortcut

ElevatedShortcut for Windows 10/8/7 is a shortcut + Administrator Privilege Screen suppressor program where you can create multiple shortcuts and make sure they are not prompted anymore. Now for those who do not know how UAC works, then this program launches the file with elevated privilege, i.e., it does not bypass UAC but starts with it. The only thing that goes off is the prompt screen.

How to use it :

When you first launch the application, you will be prompted by UAC. So choose yes, and you will get the option to create New Shortcut, Modify Shortcut.

  • New Shortcut:  Asks for selecting a program, additional command line arguments, and where to save. I will suggest you save on desktop so its seamless.
  • Modify Shortcut: This can convert an already created shortcut into elevated, making your job lot more comfortable — no need to recreate all your program shortcuts again.
  • Removing is self-explanatory.

How to launch Programs as Administrator in Windows 10

Download the program from the official page. Make sure to scroll down a bit and find the download button. Click, and the file will start downloading on your computer.

Hope both these programs help you launch Programs as Administrator in Windows 10.

One of the most common things which I did use my PC, in the old days, was making more space in my C Drive. Those days we always had less space allocated for the OS. So when we need to install something which was of considerable size, choosing a different drive was the only option. In this post, I will share tips to move or install or move Windows 10 apps to another partition or storage device in Windows 10

Install or Move Windows 10 Apps to another Partition or External Drive

There are two ways to change installed, and future app install locations. I will suggest you use the first one unless you are further customizing it.

  1. Use Native method to move apps
  2. Move App installation folder

Always create a restore point before doing any such changes.

1] Use Native method to install or move Windows 10 apps

Move Apps in Windows 10

  • Go to Settings > Apps and features
  • Find the app from the list, and click on it.
  • You will have two options—Move and Install.
  • When you click on Move, it will ask to choose a drive where it can be moved.

After a few minutes, the process will complete, and the app location will change. You will have free space on the computer. The time to move apps depends on the size of the app.

Change default installation location in Windows 10

Since you are moving apps, I would recommend you to change the future installation as well. Go to Settings > Storage > More Storage Settings > Change where new content is saved.

Change default app installation location in Windows 10

Here you change where new apps will be saved. Along with this, you can also choose where music, documents, photos, videos, movies, etc. will be saved.

2] Move Windows 10 Apps installation folder

It reminds me of the popular Stream Move Program which can move Big games from the main drive to any other drive you want without any issue. I hope this still works though I haven’t tested It recently.

Windows 10 is different, and you get options to choose a directory here. Everything is predefined, and you aren’t supposed to mess with it.  Even then few users at XDA have come with a trick which works most of the time if not all the time(looking at the responses in the comments).

It is done by moving the base directory of Windows 10 App installation to another folder but keeping the link alive. This way, you don’t crash any of the existing Tiles.

Follow the steps as below:

  • First launch command prompt with admin privilege.
  • Type takeown /F “C:\Program Files\WindowsApps” /A /R (Take Ownership of the Directory)
  • Copy All files:  robocopy “C:\Program FilesWindowsApps” D:\WindowsApps” /E /COPYALL /DCOPY:DAT
  • Delete Original Directory : rmdir /S “C:\Program FilesWindowsApps”
  • Create the symlink: mklink /D “C:Program FilesWindowsApps” “D:WindowsApps”

Why use Symbolic Links?

Symlink means Symbolic Link, which acts as call forwarder when somebody requests the original location which we moved to a new destination. This way, any request to launch the app from Tiles, or even when installing the apps don’t fail.

After looking at the thread, it seems many users rant into permission issue and here is one fix from one of the users which fixed it on his surface.

C:\windows\system32>icacls "c:program fileswindowsapps" /grant Administrator:(D,WDAC)

Then re-run the rmdir command. It should fix the native apps like weather, mail, etc. from crashing.

If you tried this, let us know how it worked for you.

OneNote is a powerful tool to keep track and calculate expenses and incomes. However, when it comes to summing up numbers, especially for a column or table,  we know how irritating it is to sum all the columns at the end of the table. Table Sum Toy is an excellent add-on and is now updated to work with Office OneNote, and it can do all those summing up simple maths for you. Let’s learn how to sum a column on OneNote

How to sum a column on OneNote

Download and install the add-on. Restart OneNote, and then you can use it to Sum values in a table like Excel.

  • Select a Table which has those numerical for you and hit the Table Sum Addon.
  • Done that a new row is inserted at the end of the table which contains all the values of cells summed up for every column, i.e. It automatically calculates the sum of every column in One Note Table
  • Special characters and non-numeric which comes in between in case is skipped. So even if you have a very complex table with Lot of Alphabets, it will not fail you.

OneNote TableSum

OneNote can do a lot of mathematical calculations now. You can do 1=1, square root, average, trigonometric function, but it cannot do a column total, which is a shame. I wish Microsoft had, ie enabled so it can make everyone’s life so easy.

Video Demo to sum a column on OneNote

What can it not do?

  • It does not work on Multiple Tables. So you can do this on only one table at a time.
  • Cannot calculate selected column values.

Download  | This is an old toy and used to work with Office 2007 and now updated to work with 2010 and above. Thanks, John Guin.

PS: In case your other tables are getting the blank row when calculating for other tables, make sure you have selected tables correctly

By default Office documents like Word and Excel take the standard icon (I mean the word icon which represents the word document) but if you want to get a cute little preview like the images to get and you can visualize what they look like before you can open it. In this post, we will share how you can create a Thumbnail of Microsoft Office Documents when you save it.

Thumbnail Preview of Office Document

Thumbnail Preview of Office Document

You can not see what’s stored in a document entirely with this, but it can tell if documents first page is filled in or not. The image on the right is precisely about what I am talking. It works with all the Microsoft Office version.

Create Thumbnail of Microsoft Office Documents when you save it

save as thumbnail office document

Its simple. You should get this option either when you save it for the first time or when you do save as. Look for Save Thumbnail option there. As soon as you save it, you would get the preview precisely like the image on the top.

If you have already saved the document earlier, use Save as option, and then check the box for creating the thumbnail, and overwrite the existing file. It will generate the thumbnail for you.

Add Tags and Author names while saving Office Documents

Also, If you carefully look, this is the right place even to add authors and tags to the file. You need not hunt places for it. Just make it a habit of tagging it. It will help you organize, and they also show up in Windows Search. Specifically useful if you deal with a lot of documents, and need to sort files based on Author or any other tags which you manage.

What do you think of this feature? Let us know if this helped.

How many times you had wanted to print a document, and it never printed because it was stuck in the printer pool. Now if you are wondering why it is stuck, even your tech guy will have a hard time figuring why do print jobs get stuck in the queue?. The problem is that some of these jobs do not get deleted from the Printer Queue. In this post, we will share how to Clear Printer Queue in Windows 10 (Stalled Print Jobs)

How to Clear Printer Queue in Windows 10 (Stalled Print Jobs)

This situation is called a “stuck printer job,”  and many a time I had seen that it has not allowed printing any other document till it was cleared. Though Modern algorithms should be handling this well, if you ever get into this kind of technical issue, below is are the solutions.

  1. Using Staller Printer Repair software
  2. Manually clearing the print queue

Using Staller Printer Repair software

Stalled Printer Repair is a free application, which allows you to magically get off this pain by detecting any stuck or stalled print job in any of your printer application and purges them.

why do print jobs get stuck in the queue?

It comes with a straightforward button which clears all the Printer Spool, which is a common area for printers. It will purge everything which means anything else in the queue is also deleted.

Now your question is, how does it do it? No Magic beans here, below is what it does, and you can do it manually if you don’t want this application which is free and portable.

How to manually delete or purge stalled Print Jobs

  1. Make sure all print jobs are complete and that no new print jobs are being submitted.
  2. Double-click Services in the Printer Control Panel and stop the “Print Spooler” service.
  3. Open the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\PRINTERS in My Computer.
  4. Delete all files located in this folder. Files in the Printers are named xxxx.spl, xxxx.shd where xxxx is a hexadecimal number. Files with .shd and .spl extensions are printer files.
  5. Double-click Services in the Control Panel and start the “Print Spooler” services.
  6. Re-print any print jobs.

If you are using Windows, I would suggest you check out the Printer Management Interface, which is cool.

Lastly, don’t do all those stuff, download it from here

Sometimes when you install or update the printer driver, it does not work correctly for some reason, and the only way is to remove printer driver which was installed before and install fresh. To do that there are one or two ways, depending on which works for you nicely.

Now before I get into details of it lets us understand one thing. Windows 7 gives you a straightforward option to delete a printer by just selecting and choose Remove printer when you right click. Though it removes the printer from the list, the drives stay back. Though I wish that an option was given to me that helped me in removing the driver also, that’s not that case.

How to completely remove printer driver from Windows 10/8/7

  1. Using the Uninstall Program
  2. Via the MMC or Microsoft Management Console

1] Using the Uninstall Program

  • In the Start Menu, type Control Panel, and open when it appears.
  • Then go to Programs and Features.
  • It will list down all the programs installed on your computer.
  • Now if you know your printer name, type in the name in the search box on the top right.
  • If you find that in the list, select and uninstall with a right click.

Apart from uninstalling the Printer Software, it will also remove the printer driver. Make sure to keep the printer disconnected. Next time when you connect the printer again, Windows update will download it or will use a generic print driver.

2] Using the MMC (Microsoft Management Console)

The first method works for every version of Windows. However, if you cannot find your driver/printer software on the list, MMC is the only option with which you are left. You need an admin account to use this. In case your account is not an admin account, take help of someone.

MMC  can also be used to create a customized control panel where you can choose which control panel item should be available. Learn How.

  • Type MMC in Windows Start Menu. You should see mmc.exe listed. Click to launch.
  • Choose File > Add / Remove Snap-in.
  • Select Printer Management from left and click on Add.

MMC to remove printer driver

  • As soon as you click on Add, a pop-up window will open. Here you get the option to add printer servers but for this situation click on Add the Local Server.

Add Local Print Server to MMC

  • You should now see your computer name listed under Print Servers. Click on Finish to complete.
  • You will also see the Printer Management Item listed on the right-hand pane. Now click on, OK.
  • Now go back to MMC Console, Expand the Print Management Tree on the left and go to Printer Servers > Your Computer Name > Drivers.
  • Here you will see all the drivers listed.
  • To remove any of the driver, select, right click and delete.

Removing Printer Driver from MMCOnce done this, your driver is completely removed. You might like to reboot your computer once to make sure.

After reboot is complete, it’s a good idea to come back and check if the printer driver is removed or not. To make it easy, click on File and save it. When you log in to your computer again, double-click to open and confirm.

Types of Dream :

  • Quiet Dream: You need to be at a tranquil place to induce this, and you need to stay still. This dream must be using the microphone to sense.
  • Action Dream: When you walk or move your iDevice a lot.  And the best part is that the music changes with what you do. Its like you move ahead in the dream.
  • Traveling Dream: This comes when you are on moves like in car or bus. Must be using the geolocation.
  • Sunshine Dream: For this, you need to get out on Sun and Stay still. Can track brightness?
  • Limbo: Getting into too many dreams. Get ready to stay forever when you get into the fourth dream in a row.
  • Still Dream: Get into this dream by staying again in a noisy place.
  • Sleep Dream: Strictly After 11 PM, and you need to be in a quiet place. It picks up the sound around you and creates sound effects based on that.
  • Reverie Dream: First dream that gets induced.

Find more about the dreams here.

Once you get into a dream, it uses your current location and adds a picture to the dream-maze. You can figure out where you had that dream last time. I am not sure how exactly this location stuff works, but this is my guess.
