What is Windows Protected Print Mode? How to Enable it?

Windows 11 now has a new feature called Windows Protected Print Mode (WPP). It was introduced in the Windows 11 2024 Update, Version 24H2, and it offers advanced security features for your printer and is suitable for the corporate environment. However, the feature is disabled by default, and you will need to enable it before you can start using it.

If you aren’t unaware, this post will discuss Windows Protected Print Mode and how to enable it.

What is Windows Protected Print Mode

Windows Protected Mode is a security feature that helps prevent sensitive print jobs. It is designed for enterprise or corporate environments where confidentiality is crucial.

The feature ensures the document is encrypted when sent from a computer to a printer. It also prevents unauthorized access to the print job during transmission and ensures that the document is printed only when someone’s taking a printout.

However, the feature is only designed to work with Mopria-certified printers today, while Manu’s existing printers are already compatible.

How To Enable Windows Protected Print Mode

  • First, press Windows Key + I to open Settings.
  • Go to Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & scanners.
  • You should be able to see Windows protected print mode here. Click on the Set Up button.
set up windows protected print mode
  • Click on Yes, Continue twice, and Windows protected print will be enabled on your PC.

Note: This will uninstall all the non-compatible printers on your PC. So, if you don’t have a Morpia-certified printer, you will need to disable Windows-protected print mode and then install your printer again to continue using it.

So that was all about Windows-protected print mode and how to enable it. This new Windows feature will help you secure your print jobs. However, you will need to meet its requirements. You can find all those information on the learn.microsoft.com website.

What happens if I enable WPP on incompatible printers?

When you enable Windows protected print mode, your incompatible printers will be uninstalled and won’t show up in Windows. You will also lose access to some of the essential features, like stapling or color management.

Can I revert to previous settings if I disable WPP?

If you turn off Windows protected print mode, you will need to reinstall your printer driver and configure it again.
